Headquarters is the third studio album by the Monkees, first released on 22 May 1967 as COM-103 (mono) and COS-103 (stereo). It was the first Monkees album to be released after the departure of Don Kirshner as the Monkees' musical director, and the first to feature the Monkees playing instruments on all tracks.
The entire album was produced by Chip Douglas, a recent member of the Turtles. Mike Nesmith, Peter Tork, and Micky Dolenz performed instrumentally on every track (except the a cappella novelty "Zilch"), with Davy Jones joining for the majority of them. Other session musicians include Douglas, Jerry Yester, and John London on bass, and horns by Frederick Seykora and Vincent De Rosa on "Shades of Gray".
None of the songs on the album were initially released as singles in the United States, though "Randy Scouse Git" and "Forget That Girl" were issued as flip sides of a single in the United Kingdom and Australia, the former under the alternate title "Alternate Title". "You Just May Be the One", "Sunny Girlfriend", and "No Time" were also issued as B-sides in Australia, and Arista Records released "Randy Scouse Git" under its original title as the B-side of a newly remixed "Daydream Believer" in the United States in 1986. In spite of its lack of American singles, the album reached #1 on the Billboard 200 top albums list for one week, before being replaced by the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
In 2000, Rhino Handmade issued a 3-CD compilation, to online customers only, called Headquarters Sessions. The box set features many tracking sessions and informal recordings, chronicling the growth of the Monkees as a studio band. It also features mono mixes of the album masters in a proposed, but ultimately unused, track order. The compilation has since fallen out of print.
