Head is the sixth album of the Monkees and the soundtrack to the motion picture Head. It was originally released by Colgems Records on 1 December 1968 as COSO-5008. The album consists of six songs by the monkees, plus the spoken-word "Ditty Diego", several sound clips from the film, and a portion of the musical score by Ken Thorne. The album was produced by the Monkees, except for the Gerry Goffin-produced "Porpoise Song (Theme from 'Head')", and assembled by Head co-writer and future movie star Jack Nicholson.
This album is notable for including two Peter Tork-penned songs, "Can You Dig It" and "Long Title: Do I Have to Do This All Over Again", the latter of which Tork also provided lead vocals. Carole King co-wrote both sides of the album's single, "Porpoise Song" with Goffin and "As We Go Along" with Toni Stern. Michael Nesmith composed Circle Sky, which was performed live for the film but appears on the album as a studio recording. Harry Nilsson's second and last songwriting contribution for the group appears as Daddy's Song.
